Why us?
Social media has made it alarmingly easy to form groups, demean others, and recruit members with empty promises. These platforms enable individuals—whether driven by unresolved insecurities from their past, an inflated sense of superiority, or a hunger for power—to manipulate vulnerable people. Some are motivated by ego, believing only their perspective is valid. Others are simply power-hungry, seeking to position themselves as leaders or authority figures through manipulation.

This is one of the most troubling aspects of social media today: it breeds false personas, mass manipulators, cult-like followings, and con artists who exploit others for personal gain.

We’ve been asked by others to research the most effective way to ensure the Board of Directors take responsibility for how the organization is run. In this organization, there is no single leader or “king”—no one person holds authority over policies or bylaws. Instead, all decisions are made collectively by the Board of Directors, ensuring transparency, shared accountability, and democratic governance.

Why here?
This brings us back to the “Why Us” section, but it’s important to dig deeper into the core issue. Research into major social media platforms consistently reveals one central truth: why do they collect so much personal data—your habits, preferences, location, and even your online behavior—and claim it’s to “better your experience”? In reality, that data is used to control your digital environment. Every ad you see, every news story, every product recommendation, and every piece of content pushed to you is tailored to maximize engagement and profit. This is data mining on a massive scale—cookies, device tracking, and behavioral analysis are used to profile you, manipulate your choices, and steer your actions for financial gain.

Then there are the conspiracy theories—claims that these platforms use your devices to listen in on your conversations, either through microphones or smart home devices, to further target ads and influence your behavior. While the extent of such surveillance remains debated, the fact that your data is being collected, analyzed, and exploited is undeniable. Whether it’s through overt tracking or speculative monitoring, the result is the same: your privacy is being traded for profit, and your autonomy is increasingly compromised.

This practice is increasingly exploited by con artists and individuals with untreated mental health needs, who use it not to seek help, but to feed harmful habits. Beliefs are distorted, trust is exploited, and people are manipulated for control or financial gain—often at the expense of those who are vulnerable.

We’ve discussed the online issues, but we can’t ignore the real-world consequences. What happens online often hides the truth—people present a curated image, but when you meet them in person, you see who they truly are. The so-called leaders, owners, or “heads” of online groups often try to replicate their online control in real life, revealing a disconnect between their digital persona and their true character. The mask comes off in the real world, and the manipulation becomes harder to ignore.

This is why we act now. At this point, there are ways to vet individuals before they enter a sacred space—ways that go beyond a simple “click to join.” True safety comes from knowing people are properly screened, not just welcomed based on a profile or promise.
